Local Search Ranking Presentation – SMX LoMo 2008
July 28th, 2008 by
I spent last week traveling including a visit to San Francisco for SMX Local Mobile.
All I’m saying is I don’t know why more of you weren’t there. As far as I’m concerned this was a big time win for anyone in attendance. I got some great tips from the speakers and an equal amount of good stuff from the attendees, some of which will be the focus of future posts.
I had the pleasure to sit on a panel with 3 really smart guys: Gib Olander , Michael Jensen of SoloSEO.com and Stephen Espinosa of eLocalListings. I’d had some experience with Michael and Stephen prior and I highly recommend reading their blogs.
So, for anyone who’s interested, here is my presentation:
I promise, I’m going to document more of the great stuff I picked up over the next few weeks
Update:
TinyURL.com now allows you to customize your tiny URL. I used the phrase: Cheap Links
Will, I really enjoyed your presentation, as well as meeting you in person finally! And you’re right, tons of great info and tips at this conference, as well as it being an important networking event.
Michael,
Right back at you – It was great to meet you and Aaron both. Clearly you guys are on a virtuous path and know your stuff too.
Looking forward to next time.
Will
Hi Will! It was great meeting you at Lo Mo, which I, too, think is a conference which doesn’t get the kind of attention it should. I learned so much my head is ready to pop thinking about how to put it all into action. Thanks for your awesome presentation, too. I hope our paths cross again soon. Mary
Hi Mary,
Thanks for dropping in. It was a real pleasure to meet you and I have already downloaded your excellent presentation.
I must have had the “where is X?” conversation 10 times at the show surprised that certain folks weren’t there. From a tactical, getting things done perspective I can’t imagine a better set of presenters.
I guess the good news is we got the goods first and will be able to test and implement before anybody else picks up on it. 🙂
I’m sure I’ll see you soon.
Best,
Will
Hi Nigel, this is a great point. However, the issue is not with Facebook, the issue is with the advertiser who set up the averdts. At the moment, the Facebook inventory is cheap so people are buying it left right and centre. Therefore they are choosing to advertise to pretty much anyone and getting their messages way off target. However, if you do it properly you can target really well even down to just 1 or 2 people. Its a bit like saying that Cadbury’s gorilla advert was rubbish, so tv advertising is rubbish, when in reality its the message and not the media. (I do agree however that Facebook knows much more about you than your TV set!)
Hey Will –
Excellent presentation, and I like the way you’ve made the slideshow of this available. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen this application used before, so you’ve taught me something new just with that.
There was almost no coverage of the local conference on Sphinn…I was really surprised by that.
How many people do you estimate attended?
Local Search continues to feel a bit like a best-kept-secret. I won’t complain about that, but it does surprise me.
Thank you for sharing your presentation, Will. Well done!
Miriam
Hi Miriam,
I’m totally with you. It’s kind of like “I can’t believe no one knows about this, shhh keep it quiet” all in one breath.
Or as I said to Michael Jensen, so far the Local Search community seems to be relatively as***le free.
Thanks for coming by — sorry we missed you at the show!
Will
Will,
Great presentation! I had a great time getting to know you, Mary, Michael and others as well.
Some great tips were shared at SMX and I feel sorry for others in our space who didn’t make it!
We’ll talk soon on Twitter…
Peace!

Is there video/audio of your prez? That would be cool.

Hey Will –
Thanks for posting your presentation here. I am sure it was a great conference and hope to make it to the next local conference – will you be in SJ this summer for SES San Jose?

I think the biggest factor lately for our clients is getting in all the places local listings can be found (local engines, directories, data providers for mobile 411, GPS etc).
I am sure it was a great conference and hope to make it to the next local conference. Looking forward to next time.
